Overview

The substrate behind shower tile is invisible once tiled but critical to long-term performance. Using the wrong backer material is a leading cause of shower tile failure.

Key Considerations

Understanding cement board vs drywall shower helps you make informed choices and ask the right questions when reviewing tile contractor proposals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use drywall in a shower?

Standard drywall should never be used in a shower or anywhere it will be exposed to water. Even moisture-resistant (green board) drywall is not appropriate behind shower tile. Shower substrates must be either cement board (Durock, HardieBacker), foam backer board (Wedi, Kerdi-Board), or a tile-ready shower pan system.

What is better for showers, Durock or Kerdi-Board?

Kerdi-Board is a foam-core panel with a polypropylene fleece surface designed specifically for tile installation in wet areas. It is waterproof itself, lighter than cement board, and easier to cut and shape. Durock cement board is water-resistant but not waterproof and must be used with a separate waterproofing membrane. Both are professional choices when used correctly.
