The Short Answer

Standard quartz and granite countertops are 3/4 inch (2 cm) or 1.25 inches (3 cm) thick. Most kitchen countertops use 3 cm (1.25 inch) material because the extra thickness eliminates the need for a plywood substrate and looks more substantial at the edge. Bathroom vanity tops are often 2 cm to save weight. Laminate countertops are typically 1.5 inches total (1/8-inch laminate over particleboard substrate). Butcher block is typically 1.5-2.25 inches thick. Concrete countertops are cast to custom thickness, typically 1.5-2 inches.
