The Short Answer
Kitchen lighting requires three layers: ambient (overall room lighting), task (work surface lighting), and accent (island pendants, glass cabinet lighting). Plan the lighting design before finalizing ceiling drywall or cabinetry installation — recessed light and under-cabinet rough-in must be coordinated with the construction sequence. Natural light direction affects artificial lighting placement — kitchens with north-facing windows may need more warm-toned artificial ambient light to counterbalance cool natural light.
